Egypt edge closer to 2026 World Cup with 2-0 win over Ethiopia

Egypt took a major step towards qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 2-0 win over Ethiopia on Friday 5/9/2025 in their Group 7 African qualifier at Cairo International Stadium.

Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush both scored from the penalty spot in the 40th and 45th minutes to secure the victory.

The result places Egypt at the top of the group with 19 points, five ahead of second-place Burkina Faso. The two teams face off next Tuesday, and a win for Egypt would secure their qualification.

Egypt dominated early, missing several chances including a one-on-one by Marmoush in the 5th minute and a header from Osama Faisal that was saved in the 18th. The Pharaohs continued to press in the second half but failed to add to their tally despite multiple substitutions and chances.

Salah was substituted in the 87th minute as Egypt closed out the game comfortably.
