Egypt ranks 73 on the Global Peace Index 2011, published on Wednesday by the Vision of Humanity Foundation, a non-profit organization comprising a group of advocates for world peace based in Australia.
Iceland ranks in first place as the most peaceful country in the world, while Somalia ranks 153 after Afghanistan, Sudan and Iraq.
Egypt is eighth in the Arab world after Qatar, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Tunisia, Morocco and Jordan, having dropped 25 positions compared to last year. This drop is due to the wave of protests that erupted with the 25 January revolution.
The report, published on the foundation’s website on the occasion of World Peace Day, said that the Middle East’s Arab Spring has greatly affected the ranking of countries, particularly Bahrain, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia.
The report added that the revolution affected Egypt’s ranking on three indicators – internal conflict, crime and violence, and political stability – which it said have experienced a significant decline following the revolution that overthrew the regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak.
