Egypt and CNN partner up to promote Egypt’s tourism industry: ministry

Egypt’s tourism ministry has partnered up with the CNN to launch a campaign to promote tourism in Egypt, a ministry statement said on Saturday.

The ministry said that CNN will sponsor a special report on Egypt’s tourism hotspots which will air on the network at the end of the year to spread awareness about all kinds of tourism in Egypt.

The statement added that the ads will be wired on the CNN channel and its affiliated sites until the end of the year.

Tourism Minister Yehia Rashed said the partnership is a good step toward accomplishing an international tourism promotion strategy.

Last month, the “This is Egypt” promotional campaign won the Best Tourism Promotional Video in the Middle East at the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (WTO) in China, beating out 63 other contestants.

The video included footage of Egypt’s diverse attractions, including historical sites such as the pyramids and Pharaonic temples, in addition to its nightlife. The 1:20 minute-long promo, sheds light on a number of unique scenic views from touristic cities that characterize Egyptian tourist destinations and activities, including cultural, marine and entertainment tourism.

Egypt’s tourism industry, a crucial source of hard currency, has suffered in the years of turmoil that followed the mass protests, as well as from the suspected bombing of a Russian plane in Sinai in 2015, which killed all 224 people on board.

The number of tourists coming to Egypt’s beaches and ancient sites stood at 9.3 million in 2015, compared with more than 14.7 million in 2010, while receipts stood at $6.1 billion.
