Egypt reiterated its call on the General Assembly of the United Nations to hold accountable those countries that are not committed to implementing Security Council’s resolutions on combating terrorism.
Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Mohamed Idris said that these resolutions include combating terrorism financing, banning the safe haven of terrorists, preventing their movement, freezing their funds and limiting their access to weapons, as well as combating inciting violence and terrorism and combating the phenomenon of foreign terrorists.
Idris’ remarks came during a high level meeting for heads of counter-terrorism bodies in New York on Thursday.
He added that it is necessary to activate mechanisms to combat the use of the internet to recruit terrorist elements, incite violence and spread hatred and contempt of religions.
Idris stressed the importance of requiring service providers to close sites containing inflammatory content and to respond to requests from States to provide law enforcement agencies with the data of those who use those sites for terrorist purposes.
He stressed the need for mechanisms for the exchange of information at the international level, and establishing an international mechanism supervised by the UN to collect information available to many international organizations concerned with combating terrorism in relation to the phenomenon of foreign terrorists, and providing such information to all states.
He stressed that Egypt is ready to cooperate with the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism to hold a meeting to assist countries in implementing their commitments in this regard, so that the needs of countries will be placed before donors and organizations that provide technical assistance.
Idris suggested that Egypt host periodic meetings under the auspices of the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism and in cooperation with the Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED), between the institutions and centers to combat terrorist speech, to push forward the implementation of the Security Council resolution on the comprehensive international framework to combat terrorism.
