Egypt calls on UAE to freeze assets of officials now under investigation

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has sent an appeal to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) calling on UAE authorities to freeze the financial assets and bank accounts of several current and former Egyptian officials now being investigated by Egypt's Attorney General, Egyptian Ambassador to the UAE Tamer Mansour said on Sunday.

Mansour told Al-Masry Al-Youm that the appeal had included a request for a moratorium on all withdrawals from these accounts until investigations were concluded.

Mansour said that the UAE had been fully cooperative with the Egyptian request and had promised to track the assets of those Egyptian officials mentioned in the letter. He added that certain Egyptian ministers and senior officials were among those included on the list.

Meanwhile, UAE companies announced their willingness to generously invest in the Egyptian Stock Exchange and in a number of investment projects in Egypt to help revive the Egyptian economy and offset losses incurred during Egypt's recent 25 January uprising, which led to the ouster of longstanding president Hosni Mubarak on 11 February, said Mansour.

Mansour added that the UAE-Egyptian Higher Committee would meet in Cairo shortly to discuss the establishment of a joint holding company.
