Egypt calls for postponing AFCON final for 24 hours

Coach of the Egyptian national football team, Diaa al-Sayed, called on the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the final match of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations for 24 hours.

Egypt qualified for the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, on Thursday, after beating Cameroon, and is scheduled to meet Senegal in the final on Sunday. The Egyptian national football team succeeded in overthrowing its the organizers in  the semi-finals, through penalty kicks

Sayed said in a televised statement: “We call on the CAF to postpone the final match of the Africa Cup of Nations for 24 hours in order for equal an opportunity between both sides.”

Senegal played the semi-final match against Burkina Faso on Wednesday, 24 hours before the match between Egypt and Cameroon.

The Egyptian team faced the host country ten times in the history of the Africa Cup of Nations, yesterday’s match against Cameroon, and succeeded in winning five times, drawing once and losing in four others.

Egypt beat a host country of the tournament for the first time in 1957 by defeating the Sudanese team 2-1.

In the 1984 edition, Egypt beat the host country, Côte d’Ivoire, with famous two goals by Taher Abu Zeid.

Egypt beat the host South Africa team at the end of the first round of the AFCON tournament in the 1996 edition, and qualified for the quarter-finals.

Egypt qualified for the 1998 AFCON final in Burkina Faso at the expense of the host team, with two goals.
