Achieving justice in Lebanon is “the only way to deter criminals,” Egyptian Foreign Minister Mohamed al-Orabi said Sunday in a first official response to UN-backed tribunal indictments accused Hizbullah members of killing former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri in 2005.
Indictments ordering the arrest of four Lebanese nationals were handed to Lebanese authorities on Thursday.
Official news reports in Lebanon said the four suspects belonged to Hizbullah. Hizbullah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah dismissed the accusations and ruled out the possibility of implementing the UN decision.
Orabi told reporters on Sunday that Egypt was keen on respecting the tribunal investigating Hariri’s assassination, since achieving justice will halt the assassinations that have continued in Lebanon for years.
He said justice and stability in Lebanon cannot be compromised, as justice, demanded by every Lebanese, is the real guarantee of stability.
He added that investigations will be conducted into suspects, not organizations, political or religious groups.
Orabi concluded that Egypt is confident about Lebanese commitment toward their national unity.
