The Egyptian Foreign Ministry says that the East African Community states have renewed Egypt's invitation to attend a Nile Basin summit, as suggested by Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
Assistant Foreign Minister for African Affairs Mona Omar said she considered the invitation a sign of positive developments in relations between Egypt and Nile Basin countries.
“Cairo is willing to overcome all obstacles and open the door for negotiations,” she said, referring to differences over Egypt’s Nile water quotas.
In a related development, Omar said that she had called Cote d’Ivoire’s Foreign Minister Gervais Jean-Marie to congratulate him on President Hassan Watara’s new government, and that she would fly to Ethiopia on Monday to attend a meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council.
