Nearly 200 people Monday afternoon gathered outside the Egyptian Radio and Television Union building on Cairo's Nile Corniche to protest the prosecution of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, who is currently being detained pending investigation into allegations of corruption and killing protesters.
The protesters chanted “Freedom for the president” while carrying banners that read “April 25… the people's uprising.” Meanwhile, about 100 passersby on the opposing sidewalk demanded a speedy trial, his transfer to the Tora prison hospital, and swift action to return money they allege he stole.
Clashes between the two sides prompted security forces to intervene and call on both sides to demonstrate peacefully without attacking each other.
A number of Facebook users had declared their intention to organize a million man march on 25 April against Mubarak's trial whom they described as a “champion of the glorious October War.” However, the planned protest only succeeded in attracting a few.
