DCAF picks of the week

The Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival returns with a month-long program of dance and theater performances, film screenings from across the African continent, an exciting lineup of Egyptian and foreign musicians, interactive art installations and workshops for upcoming artists, as well as families and children.

Augmented Airspaces

Lot Amoros from Spain and Dia Hamed from Egypt create an art installation in Cairo, filming the city from the air and enabling viewers on the ground to see the live footage in a completely radical way, thanks to an overlaid digital skin layer.

End/Igne

This play by the Algerian Compagnie el Ajouad is a take on self-immolation in contemporary Algerian society. It follows protagonist Moussa, an employee at the village’s hospital morgue, who receives the body of his best friend. The performance is in French with Arabic subtitles.

Sham MCs and Khadafi Dub

Leading US trap/dub/electronic musician Khadafi Dub will perform followed by Syrian hip-hop artists Sham MCs.

‘White Rabbit Red Rabbit’

Khaled Abol Naga will enact Iranian artist Nassim Soleimanpour’s performance on authority for the first time. With no rehearsals, set or props, the performance promises audiences many surprises. Soleimanpour will discuss his work at 9 pm.

‘Blind Ambition’

Leading artist Hassan Khan shot this film using a Samsung Galaxy mobile phone. He explores situations and moments that take place at different times and places in Cairo with a different set of actors for each of the nine episodes. Khan will also hold a Q&A session at 8:30 pm.

‘The Great War’

The Dutch Hotel Modern will show their live animation theater piece for the first time in the Arab world. Audiences witness the reconstruction of the landscapes of the Western Front on a miniature scale using sawdust, potting soil, rusty nails and parsley as trees. A friendly field gradually mutates into a poisonous mound of mud.
