Damietta Facebook campaign urges boycott of meat price hikes

In an effort to demonstrate against the recent hike in meat prices, some locals in Damietta have launched a Facebook campaign to boycott both local and imported meat.

One kilo of veal has gone up to LE80, while imported veal sells for LE90 per kilo. The cost for 1 kilo of imported buffalo meat has reached LE50, while local buffalo meat ranges between LE65 and LE75.

"How much further can the prices go with the Eid al-Adha feast approching and how will the poor afford them?" said Mohamed Saad Abu Eid, one of the campaign founders, referring to the 25 percent increase in the cost of meat.

Meat markets have witnessed a significant increase in local meat prices which traders attribute to the fact that there is a general meat shortage.
