Egyptian civil society organizations have urged the World Bank to be more involved with the citizens in its development projects in Egypt, rather than merely financing development plans.
The organizations, the WB said early in July, have asked the bank to adopt a “people-centered approach” and to ensure the active engagement of citizens in determining development priorities.
The organizations submitted what the bank called “Parallel Country Partnership Framework”, giving recommendations and feedback concerning the CPF already prepared by the international organization for its activities in Egypt in 2015-2019.
“The Bank recently decided to modify the current draft CPF for Egypt, following wide-ranging concerns raised by stakeholders during the consultations held over two phases in Cairo, Alexandria and Aswan”, said the bank.
The organizations, in their alternative document, asked the bank to focus on the empowerment of the human element, making citizens central to its anti-poverty efforts by engaging them in determining the reasons behind poverty. It said the bank’s strategies should deal with individuals rather than society as a whole, citing the differences among various families in dealing with poverty.
