Although Free Egyptians Party leader and MP Emad Gad withdrew his resignation from the party after other party leaders objected to his bid to run for undersecretary of Parliament, tensions continued within the party.
"I backtracked on my resignation after I talked with Naguib Sawiris, party founder. But I insist on my right to run for the Parliament undersecretary position," Gad told Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Head of the parliamentary body, Alaa Abed, said the Free Egyptians Party makes its decisions collectively. The party members' commitment to the party's decisions should be unquestionable, he added, pointing out that the party had already prepared candidates for the chair of four parliamentary committees, as well as the undersecretary position, and that Gad was not one of them.
Gad made an individual decision and announced his candidacy for the undersecretary position, said Abed, who refused to name the party's candidate for the undersecretary position.
Gad's parliamentary membership could be withdrawn if he resigns from the Free Egyptians Party, in accordance with Article 6 of the Parliament law. The Parliament would vote on Gad's membership if he were to resign from the party.
