Cities in South Sinai , especially Sharm al-Sheikh, have seen a reduction in crime since the 25 January revolution, as checkpoints have been secured and valleys have been closed off by the army.
Armed robberies carried out by gangs and escaped convicts have decreased significantly since the revolution.
Police troops patrol the beaches of Sharm al-Sheikh to reassure tourists that South Sinai is safe.
“The gangs have realized that political change has occurred in Egypt, and that security has returned in full force,” said Hatem Amin, assistant director of security in South Sinai.
