The Alexandria Administrative Court annulled Sunday the Information Ministry's decision to ban a female TV presenter on channel 5 from appearing on tv wearing a hijab. It also ordered that she be disbursed LE20,000 as compensations for damages she suffered due to the decision.
Judicial sources said the court has established a principle that the veil preserves women’s dignity and doesn’t prevent them from performing their duties.
Lamia al-Saeed filed a lawsuit in 2008 demanding thate the decision be reversed due to its illegality.
The court reasoned that wearing the hijab does not undermine a TV presenter in the eyes of her audience.
The court also added that banning the veil in any place diminishes personal freedom and freedom of religion.
