Coptic Church lawyer Ramses al-Naggar said a Wednesday court verdict allowing divorced Copts to remarry would be "irrelevant" since it followed a previous verdict–issued by the Supreme Constitutional Court–that disallowed remarriages.
“The church need not challenge the verdict, nor even comment on it,” he said.
Coptic leaders denounced the verdict and called for expediting non-Muslim personal status legislation that they hope will put an end to the controversy.
“The verdict violates the Bible,” said Confessional Council Undersecretary Tharwat Bassily. “The Bible contains more than 100 verses about the issue.”
Coordinator of the Secular Copts Front Kamal Zakher called on the judiciary to “deal with the church with wisdom.”
