Court to issue Hassan Malek verdict April 30

The Cairo Criminal Court set on Tuesday April 30 to issue a verdict against Muslim Brotherhood businessman Hassan Malek and others over charges of harming the national economy.

The court listened to the lawyers of the defendants, who claimed that the prosecution’s permission to inspect the defendants’ houses was invalid, as they were permitted to rely on office investigations only. They also claimed that the evidence was invalid.

The Supreme State Security Prosecution had ordered the inspection of Malek’s house, where papers belonging to the Muslim Brotherhood were found. According to investigations, the leaflets included the Brotherhood’s plans to harm the national economy by creating a continuous demand for the US dollar to devalue the Egyptian pound against foreign currencies. It also included plots to target members of the armed forces, the police and the tourism sector, especially Russian and European delegations, according to the investigation.
