Cairo Court of Appeals set 22 July to start the retrial of activist Alaa Abdel Fattah and 25 others in the case known in the media as the "Shura Council events".
The 26 defendants were sentenced to 15 years in prison, a LE100,000 fine each as well as an additional five years of surveillance following their scheduled release from incarceration..
They had taken part in a protest without prior permission outside the Shura Council in November 2013 against the law regulating protests.
The prosecution accused the defendants of assaulting Lieutenant Colonel Emad Tahoun and stealing his communication equipment, organizing a demonstration without a permit in front of the Shura Council, rioting, assaulting police officers, blocking the road, assembling and destroying public property.
