An Egyptian court will issue a verdict on 27 May against Zakariya Azmy, former presidential chief of staff, and others on charges of illicit gains.
Azmy's wife Baheya Halawa and her brother Gamal Abdel Moneim Halawa are being tried before the same court. The three defendants are accused of gaining LE42.6 million illegally.
The prosecution's report referred Azmy to trial on 17 August 2011 on charges of illicit gains and the abuse of power as he was an MP and the presidential chief of staff at the same time. He also was a leader in the dissolved National Democratic Party and his brother-in-law helped him conceal some of his real estate properties.
Investigations said that Azmy used his power to obtain, and give his wife, pieces of land through illegal allocation by direct order.
State-run news service MENA reported that the illicit gains included in-kind gifts from national press institutions as well as antiquities found in Azmy's house.
