Court to hear Khaled Saeed case Tuesday

The Alexandria Misdemeanors Court will hold its first hearing in the Khaled Saeed case on Tuesday. Saeed’s family accuses two policemen, Mohamed Salah and Mohamed Sherif, of beating the victim to death on 8 June.

Police are expected to ramp up security outside the courthouse in anticipation of possible riots, while sympathizers with Saeed have printed up 3000 posters bearing the victim’s image for distribution on the day of the hearing.

The court has reportedly ordered that journalists covering the session must first obtain permits for security purposes.

Local civil society organizations and two foreign human rights organizations are expected to attend the session.

Saeed’s lawyer has announced he would call for changing the charge against the defendants from “beating” to “beating to death.”
