Court fines journalist and editor-in-chief LE10,000 for defamation

Dokki Appeals Court fined two newspaper journalists LE10,000 each Monday for defaming Major General Hassan Khalaf, head of the culture minister's office sector.

Sout al-Umma journalist Mohamed Saad Khattab and editor-in-chief Abdel Halim Qandil must pay the fine in addition to LE50 for lawyer fees after publishing an article on 2 January that accused Khalaf of committing financial and administrative violations since he started working with former Culture Minister Emad Abu Ghazi.

In a statement by the ministry, Khalaf vowed to file a lawsuit demanding compensation for the libel and defamation and said that he will donate the amounts decided by court to charity organizations.
