Court to consider lawsuit against head of elections commission

The Alexandria Administrative Court will consider a lawsuit on Monday submitted by Ahmed Saleh Othman, an independent candidate running in 28 November parliamentary elections, demanding the dismissal of Abdel Aziz Omar, head of the state-run High Elections Commission (HEC).

According to Othman, Omar is a relative of President Hosni Mubarak, who is also president of the ruling National Democratic Party.

Othman has requested that a State Council judge be appointed to head up the HEC in place of Omar.

“The electoral process is unconstitutional,” Othman said, noting that the commission had reduced the grace period for candidacy applications from 45 days to 25 days.

“Reducing the application period contravenes Article II of Egypt's law on political rights,” he said.
