North Cairo Criminal Court has cleared Major Mohamed Sadeq Dewidar, of Salam Police Station, on charges of killing a protester and attempting to kill two others on 28 January 2011, known as the “Friday of Anger.”
Attorney General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud earlier referred the suspect to the criminal court for allegedly shooting peaceful protesters at the police station to disperse them, and killing one of them.
More than 800 people were killed during the January uprising that led to ouster of former President Hosni Mubarak. Many were killed outside police stations. The most violent confrontations between protesters and police took place on 28 January.
Former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, six of his assistants, and Mubarak are charged with giving instructions to kill protesters, and await a court ruling to be issued on 2 June.
In March, Egyptian courts acquitted police officers from Hadayek al-Kobba and Sayeda Zeinab police departments in Cairo from similar charges.
