The Court of Cassation accepted an appeal filed by former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly on Sunday against a ruling that sentenced him to 12 years in prison on charges of profiteering and money laundering.
In May 2011, Giza Criminal Court sentenced Adly to 12 years imprisonment and fined him LE4.9 million on the charges. Adly had allowed companies to use plots of ministry-owned land illegally.
In February, an Egyptian court sentenced Adly and his aide, Hassan Abdel Hamid, to three years in prison and sentenced Bassem Ahmed Lotfy, the leader of Adly's personal guards a year of hard labor after all three were indicted on charges of forcing conscripts and policemen to do agricultural and construction work on land owned by Adly.
The Cairo Criminal Court had also sentenced Adly and former President Hosni Mubarak to life for their role in the killing of protesters during the 25 January revolution. Adly and Mubarak challenged the sentences and will be retried on 13 April.
