Corruption rampant within Al-Azhar, says grand sheikh

The Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar Ahmed al-Tayyeb has announced that he will give back the salary he has received since his appointment in March of 2010 due to the corruption that has spread widely within this religious institution.

Al-Tayyeb receives LE70,000 per month in the form of salary and bonuses.

He said he is being unjustly criticized by Al-Azhar personnel for closing what he called the “money tab” of unjustified bonuses given to the staff.

“If the fortress of Islam is so decayed, what about the rest of the country?” he asked.
