Coptic leaders in Alexandria estimate more than 70 percent of the Christian community in that governorate came out to vote in parliamentary elections Monday and Tuesday.
Nader Morcos of the Coptic Ecclesiastical Council in Alexandria described the turn out as unprecedented, saying previous years had seen less than 20 percent Coptic participation.
Joseph Malak, head of the Egyptian Center for Developing Studies and Human Rights, also noted the high turnout.
The center's exit polling of Coptic voters indicated that the Egyptian Bloc won the most Coptic votes, followed by the Revolution Continues Coalition, Egypt’s National Party, Development and Reform, Wafd and other parties.
Malak said that the poll revealed Copts did not necessarily vote according to the candidate lists supported by the Church.
