Coptic Christmas to witness heightened church security

Coptic churches all over Egypt celebrate Coptic Christmas on Thursday amid tight security measures and a melancholic atmosphere following a terrorist attack at a church in Alexandria that killed scores of worshipers on New Year’s Eve.

Coptic Pope Shenouda III will give mass at the Abbasiya Cathedral. Many officials and public figures will attend to express solidarity with Copts.

“The interior ministry is securing all churches,” said Bishop Youanis, the pope’s secretary. “We will pray for victims of the incident.”

Security services said that people entering churches will have to show ID cards and pass through metal detectors. Handbags will be prohibited inside.
