Coptic Catholics name new patriarch

The Coptic Catholic Church celebrated Tuesday its ordination of a new patriarch, Father Ibrahim Ishaq.

Ishaq was named the church’s new head during a ceremony held at the Virgin Mary Cathedral in Nasr City, Cairo.

Ishaq succeeds Cardinal Antonius Naguib who stepped down for health reasons.

The church said Ishaq will receive congratulations from church delegations for a week after his ordination.

No official count is available for the number of Coptic Catholics in Egypt. The country’s Christians are estimated to be 10 percent of the population and mostly belong to the Coptic Orthodox Church.
