Constitutional committee members suggest amendments to roadmap

Confusion prevailed at the 50-member constitutional committee after committee members submitted requests to alter the roadmap and hold the presidential elections before the parliamentary elections.

Committee head Amr Moussa denied that any amendments had been made to the roadmap in a statement to journalists ahead of the committee's closed-door session Sunday .

“The issue is not on the table. But that does not rule out that committee members have the right to submit proposals,” Moussa said.

Mohamed Ghoneim, constitutional committee member, said he submitted a proposal to amend the roadmap so as to conduct the presidential elections before parliamentary elections.

“Conducting the parliamentary elections first will prolong the period during which interim President Adly Mansour would remain in office, while the country needs an elected president,” said Ghoneim.

Laborers' representative at the committee Ahmed Khairy also said he submitted a proposal to amend the roadmap.
