Committee to Protect Journalists names Egypt as third top jailer of journalists

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said in a report released on Wednesday that for the second year in a row, Egypt is occupying third place on the list of the world’s top jailers of journalists after Turkey and China.

The (CPJ) that the international community has failed to pressure the world’s “worst” jailers of journalists such as Egypt, noting that US president Donald Trump’s “nationalistic rhetoric” and “labeling of critical media as ‘fake news'” has provided a framework for these countries to jail journalists.

In the CPJ’s 2015 census on press freedom, Egypt ranked second.
