A fact-finding committee looking into the deaths of protesters on the orders of President Mohamed Morsy started its work in Suez Governorate Wednesday.
“The committee obtained new information and evidence on the killing of revolution martyrs in Suez,” committee member Ali al-Geneidy said, without providing details. He said the information uncovered could be used in court.
Committee head Sherif al-Rasheedy said the Suez investigation into protester deaths that have occurred since the beginning of the January 2011 revolution could last for two months.
The committee has inspected protest sites and other locations where demonstrators were killed and taken the accounts of eyewitnesses, Rasheedy told Al-Masry Al-Youm. Among the sites included in the inquiry are Suez Police Station and Arbaeen Square, as well as Abdel Khaleq Tharwat, Sheikh Mohamed Abdu, Adly Yakan and Ahmed Maher streets.
The committee may begin new investigations or reopen official investigations that have been concluded, and may interrogate security forces and eyewitnesses involved in the incidents. It is allowed to consult both governmental and nongovernmental experts for assistance in its mission.
