The Federation of Egyptian Chambers of Commerce has called on the Cabinet to take urgent action to import meat to avoid increases in prices.
Livestock or frozen meat should be brought into Egypt ahead of the Eid al-Adha feast period in October, the organization said, warning of a crisis.
The price of wholesale poultry incresed 50 piasters per kilogramme this week, reaching LE12.50 instead of the previous LE12.
Mohamed Wahba, chief of the butchers' division, said wholesale meat prices have risen in recent days to LE47.5 per kilogramme due to the difficulty of transport and ongoing political problems.
Wahba told Al-Masry Al-Youm that a kilo of meat is offered to citizens at LE70 for the kilo.
Wahba warned of new increases in the prices of meat and called on the Cabinet to urgently take measures to import meat, whether livestock or frozen, to bring about a balance in the market before the Eid al-Adha vacation.
Head of the poultry division Abdel Aziz al-Sayed said the price of poultry increased 50 piasters this week, reaching LE12.50 per kilo.
Sayed pointed out the increase is not high as prices have been going up and down recently between LE11.50 and LE12.50.
While recession is currently dominating the Egyptian market, the real crisis will occur when demand increases on poultry, Sayed claimed.
