The Egyptian Meteorological Authority (EMA) has warned that the cold snap across Egypt will last until February 7, with cold weather during the day, growing very cold during the night and early morning.
This marks the end of ‘Tobi’, the fifth month of the ancient Egyptian and Coptic calendars. It lies between January 9 and February 7 of the Gregorian calendar, and is known as the peak of cold weather in Egypt.
Weather maps revealed that temperatures will continue to drop in all areas and in the new cities of Greater Cairo, going down to as low as seven degrees Celsius, while the temperatures in some areas will fall below zero, such as in St. Catherine and Nakhl in North Sinai.
The EMA attributed the sharp and rapid fluctuations in weather conditions to due to an air depression on the surface of the Mediterranean Sea centered on the island of Cyprus, accompanied by very cold air masses coming from southern Europe.
Saturday’s weather:
Cold weather will prevail during the day in Greater Cairo, Lower Egypt, the northern coasts, and northern Upper Egypt, growing warm in South Sinai and southern Upper Egypt.
The weather will be extremely cold at night and in the early morning for most parts of the country.
Frost will form on crops in central Sinai, northern Upper Egypt, and New Valley Governorate.
The minimum temperature for Greater Cairo ranges from six to seven degrees Celsius, while snow may form on the peaks of the St. Catherine Mountains, where the minimum temperature hits less than zero degrees.
There will be chances of light to moderate rainfall on areas of the northwestern coasts and northern Lower Egypt, with an incidence of approximately 30 percent to areas of the northeastern coasts and the Red Sea mountain ranges.
