Coalition lists articles of contention in Civil Service Law

An independent coalition of trade unions is preparing a list of controversial measures in the Civil Service Law that has triggered several employee protests since its enactment in March.

Tamadon (Solidarity), an alliance of more than 30 trade unions opposed to the law, said Wednesday it was done writing down a legal reponse, explaining the law’s disadvantages.

While the government plans to adhere to the law as a major step towards reforming the work of around six million of its civil employees in terms of appointments, payments and evaluation, workers say the law infringes on their financial benefits and provides for wrongful assessment rules.

Tadamon said signatures would be collected from opponents to the law at all government agencies, and said it had launched a Facebook page to communicate with its followers.

Tarek Koeib, who heads an independent union of workers at the Egyptian Tax Authority, said the movement will hold a press conference, before massive protests planned by trade unions on September 12, where it will explain the vision of the campaign and the points of contention in the law.
