CNN: BP partially evacuates North Sea Valhall oil field

BP is partially evacuating an oilfield in the North Sea because a barge has broken loose and is drifting out of control in rough weather.

BP says it employs 235 people in the Valhall oilfield but it cannot confirm the number of people who were being evacuated Thursday.

Valhall is in the southern Norwegian North Sea, 210 miles (340 kilometers) southwest of the Norwegian city of Stavanger. The oilfield has eight platforms.

The Eide Marine Group, which owns the barge, tells CNN it has located the barge and is tracking it, but it is waiting for daylight before trying to take control of it.

A spokesman for Eide Marine Group says the barge is 360 feet long (110 meters) and it became unattached in rough weather while being towed by a tugboat.
