Close Mubarak confidant can’t pay bail, say judicial sources

Hussein Salem has not yet paid bail because he has yet to find “clean” sources of money, said senior Spanish judicial sources and Egyptian sources following investigations into the wanted business tycoon.

Salem has close personal ties to Mubarak and was also involved in questionable deals concerning Egyptian gas exports to Israel. He currently faces charges of money laundering in Spain and is being detained a Madrid hospital.

The judicial sources explained that Salem cannot pay bail because his money, located in both Egypt and Spain, has been frozen due to questions over whether it was illegally obtained.

The sources also said that Salem will not pay his bail from bank accounts in other countries as he is not willing to disclose those accounts, fearing they might also be frozen. His only way out, they said, is to let another person with a clean financial record pay the bail.

The sources also said that Salem would be moved to a prison hospital once his health condition improves.

Meanwhile, an Egyptian source denied that a judicial delegation travelled from Egypt to Spain to follow up on the investigations.
