Clashes between president’s supporters, opponents leave 59 injured in Fayoum

Clashes between President Mohamed Morsy's supporters and opponents Sunday night  in Fayoum have left 59 injured, a Health Ministry official told Al-Masry Al-Youm on Monday.

The victims sustained injuries and bruises caused by birdshot, said Yahia Moussa, the ministry's media adviser.

The encounter involved members of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Tamarod campaign, the latter of which is collecting signatures in support of early presidential elections.

Moussa said 55 of the injured left the hospital on Monday.

Opposition groups are gearing up for massive protests on 30 June to mark the first anniversary of Morsy’s election and demand for early presidential elections. Morsy’s Islamist backers, meanwhile, are preparing for parallel demonstrations to defend his status as elected president.
