A delegation of Civil Aviation Ministry employees, in a meeting with Prime Minister Essam Sharaf on Tuesday, threatened to block air traffic for all flights on Sunday onwards if Ibrahim Mannaa, the newly-appointed Aviation Minister, did not resign.
They told Sharaf they would hold daily demonstrations before the ministry and in Tahrir Square, and they would prevent ministry officials from entering their offices until Mannaa leaves.
They proposed certain names, including Tawfik Assy, former president of EgyptAir, to replace him.
The employees submitted a report about Mannaa’s excesses to the attorney general and the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces before he was sworn in as minister.
“Mannaa was one of Mubarak’s men,” said Magdy Abdel Hady, head of air traffic control. “He’ll help those who stole the country’s wealth to flee with their booty.”
“Mannaa gave businessman Maged Sami vast space within the premises of Cairo Airport in violation of the law and over objections by airport director Hassan Rashed,” he added.
