Surrounded by workers from various industrial sectors angrily demanding better wages in front of Cairo’s parliament building, one intrepid citizen hoisted a banner reading: “Happy Birthday, Mr. President.”
“If these workers have the right to protest, I too have the right to express my appreciation for the president,” said Ahmed Mostafa, who brought his two children along to participate in his modest demonstration.
Mostafa, who says he proudly hangs a photo of President Hosni Mubarak in his home, paid LE249 for the banner. “Mubarak has protected us from internal and external enemies,” he proclaimed.
Mostafa’s son, Seif, explained: “My father taught us to love our president–that’s why I’m here.”
