China’s ‘On Top of the Pyramid’ exhibition extends hours to evening

The exhibition “On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilization of Ancient Egypt” currently being held at Shanghai Museum in China has achieved great success since its opening on July 19.

It received up to 136,000 visitors during the first two weeks of its opening, which prompted the management of the Shanghai Museum to extend visiting hours to the evening for four days a week.

The Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Mohamed Ismail, explained that the evening visiting period will start at 5:00 pm immediately after the end of the morning and will extend until 9:00 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays per week during the summer vacation for schools and universities.

He added that this extension showcases the success of the exhibition and the Chinese people’s passion for ancient Egyptian civilization and their desire to learn about it more closely.

Ismail said that this exhibition is one of the means of promoting Egypt in the Chinese market, especially the cultural tourism product, which is one of the main tourism products that the Chinese tourist is interested in.

The exhibition opened on July 19 and is scheduled to continue in China until August 2025.

Amongst the 787 artifacts on display are a huge statue of Akhenaten and a coffin from the archaeological site of Saqqara, which is the first to be unveiled at Shanghai Museum.

The highlights of the exhibition include statues of pharaohs such as Tutankhamun, Amenemhat III, and Ramses II, a complete collection of mummy coffins, royal exquisite jewelry, newly discovered painted coffins, animal mummies, and statues from the Saqqara region of Egypt.
