The death toll from the earthquake that struck Dingri County in Shigatse City, Xizang Autonomous Region in southwestern China on Tuesday has risen to 95, with 130 others injured, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua.
The earthquake, which struck Dingri County, measured 6.8 on the Richter scale at 9:05 am on Tuesday.
Chinese President Xi Jinping has instructed that all-out efforts be made to save lives and minimize casualties, calling for maximum efforts to conduct search and rescue operations and provide medical treatment to the injured.
He also urged efforts to prevent secondary disasters, resettle affected residents appropriately, and effectively deal with the aftermath.
According to the Associated Press, dozens of aftershocks have hit western China and across the border in Nepal.
The Chinese Ministry of Emergency Management said that about 1,500 firefighters and rescuers have been deployed to search for people trapped under the rubble.
