The Suez Canal achieved in 2013-2014 its highest revenues since it opened for international navigation in 1869, Suez Canal Authority chief, Lieutenant General Mohab Mamish, said Wednesday.
Revenues for 2013-2014 stood at US$5.310 billion (LE37 billion), which is 5.5 percent higher than the previous year.
Mamish praised the size of the revenues, saying that it "reflects the great confidence the international maritime community, ship owners and international freight companies have in the canal's administration, as well as in security procedures adopted for the canal by Egypt's Armed Forces."
The Suez Canal is a major source for Egypt's national income and is a vital passageway for world trade.
