Chairperson of the National Post Authority (NPA) Hani Mahmoud has submitted his resignation less than two months after his appointment, according to official sources from the NPA.
Mahmoud said he submitted his resignation after large numbers of employees went on strike to protest their deteriorating financial and working conditions.
Mahmoud, the source added, worked with Vodafone before joining the NPA. He submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq’s cabinet but it was rejected. He submitted it again to the new Prime Minister, Essam Sharaf.
Several employees from post offices across Egypt are continuing protests at their offices, and have threatened to take their protests to the authority's headquarters in Cairo.
Protesters are demanding better salaries and permanent employment.
In a statement issued three days ago, the Ministry of Communications urged the protesting employees to return to work and not to respond to calls for strikes.
