Central Bank governor’s car stolen, bodyguard killed

After his car was stolen on the Ring Road Wednesday morning, Central Bank Governor Hisham Ramez, who was not in the vehicle at the time, told Al-Arabiya satellite channel the carjacking was not an assasination attempt.

One police officer assigned to protect Ramez was killed in the attack.

Ramez’s driver was heading to the bank official's home in 6th of October City to take him to his office in downtown Cairo when he was stopped on the Ring Road by five armed men in a Toyota. The attackers shot the bodyguard and fled with the governor’s vehicle, according to reports given to security officials.

A report of the incident has been referred to prosecutors for investigation.

Ramez officially became the new Central Bank of Egypt governor earlier this month, replacing Farouq al-Oqda.
