CAPMAS: Unemployment in Q2 of 2014 reaches 13.3 percent

The Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) declared on Saturday a slight decline in the employment rate during the second quarter of 2014, reaching 13.3 percent of the workforce compared to 13.4 percent during the first quarter.

The rate recorded nine percent during the second quarter of 2010, CAPMAS said in a report, attributing the increase to the continuous slowdown of economic activities.

The number of the unemployed between April- June 2014 declined by one percent, reaching 3.7 million, representing 13.3 percent of the workforce.

The number of male employees increased from the first quarter recording 19.1 million, while number of female employees increased reaching 4.8 million.

The report showed that agriculture and fishing sectors have the biggest number of employees, reaching 6.3 million employees, representing 26.5 percent. Manufacturing industries came next with 2.8 million employees, representing 11.7 percent. The construction sector followed with 2.7 million employees, representing 11.4 percent. The real estate sector had the lowest number of employees reaching 42,000, representing only 0.2 percent of the workforce.

Unemployment among males reached 9.8 percent of the total male workforce, compared to 9.9 percent during the previous quarter. Unemployment among females reached 24.8 percent in the first half of 2014.

Urban governorates saw the highest unemployment rates with 16.7 percent of the workforce, while the rate in rural areas of the Delta was lower and stood at 11 percent of the total workforce there.

The number of the unemployed youth between 15 and 29 years old reached 70.1 percent of the total number of the unemployed.
