Canadian singer “The Weeknd” announced he has donated US$2.5 million from his private fund as a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Program to help affected Palestinian people in Gaza Strip.
The world food program said that the donation is equivalent to four million meals from food parcels that will feed more than 173,000 Palestinians for two weeks.
The TMZ website reported that the United Nations World Food Program announced on Friday that The Weeknd had directed nearly $2.5 million from its XO Humanitarian Fund in response to the World Food Program’s humanitarian aid in Gaza.
The Weeknd was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador in October 2021, and has supported several World Food Program relief missions with donations amounting to $1.8 million so far through the “XO” Fund.
The singer is committed to donating the equivalent of one dollar for each concert ticket sold to his concert tours to the XO Humanitarian Fund.
He had previously participated at the Cannes International Film Festival in May, during which he promoted his series “The Idol” as part of its world premiere at the festival, with young actress Lily-Rose Depp co-starring.
The Weeknd’s latest song, “Popular”, saw him collaborate with world-famous superstar Madonna and was released on YouTube.
