Campaign launched to fix stray dogs, cats in Sinai resort towns

The Egyptian Society of Animal Friends (ESAF) launched a campaign this week aimed at having stray dogs in the Sinai resort cities of Dahab and Sharm al-Sheikh fixed so as to prevent them from procreating.

The campaign also aims to vaccinate stray dogs and other animals against rabies.

“We're trying to promote international principles of animal rights,” said ESAF Director Ahmed al-Sherbiny. “Local authorities have promised to halt the practice of getting rid of stray animals by simply killing them.”

Campaigners have so far had 58 dogs and cats fixed and vaccinated.

Al-Sherbiny says he is preparing a report on the Egyptian cities that most respect animal rights, which he plans to present to international organizations with a view to assessing Egypt’s global standing in this regard.
