Camel battle defendants deny charges

The defendants accused of orchestrating a bloody attack on pro-democracy protesters in February denied all indictments during the first session of their trial on Sunday.

Several key figures from former President Hosni Mubarak's regime are facing charges of planning and funding a bloody attack on 2 February against pro-democracy protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square. The attacks were led by horse and camel riders, and the incident became famous as the "Camel Battle."

The defendants include former Shura Council speaker Safwat al-Sherif, former People's Assembly speaker Fathi Sorour, and former Manpower and Immigration Minister Aisha Abdel Hady, in addition to several members of the now-deposed National Democratic Party.

The session saw wrangles between the judge and Mortada Mansour, one of the defendants, as the latter accused a witness of perjury and waved documents that he said proved his innocence.

The camel attack left several protesters dead and hundreds injured on 2 February.
