In the wake of the government’s failure to dismiss state university leaders, students are calling for a million-strong demonstration on 13 September to press the government into action.
In March, protests began for dismissing all state university leaders that were loyal to the regime of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.
Sixteen student movements, together with faculty members and other university staff, called for a general strike and open ended sit-in at all universities to begin on 17 September.
Last August, the cabinet decided to dismiss state university leaders whose terms were nearing completion and hold elections to fill their posts.
In a statement on Monday, student movements said the decision should have included all leaders.
The statement stressed that the strike would not end until all demands are met. It added that leaders suspected of corruption and misappropriating public funds should be referred to the attorney general.
