A recent decision from the Ministry of Higher Education bans some part-time students at Cairo University from attending lectures. The decision, issued by Minister of Higher Education Hani Helal prompted a number of students to take legal action against him and against Hossam Kamel, president of Cairo University.
The students are challenging the decision, which cancels all lectures for part-time students who have the option of attending classes on campus, except those on Friday. To make up for the cancelled classes, the lectures will be aired on television. The students also accused the Supreme Council of Universities, which approved the decision, of threatening their future and treating them unequally.
In related news, Minister of Parliament Mohamed el-Beltagi submitted an urgent inquiry to Minister Helal which described the difficulties students in the Faculty of Engineering at Cairo University face, after they were transferred from other universities and denied admission.
